Mr. Yu Minhong, Founder and CEO of New Oriental shared his knowledge with MBA students
On December 5th, the Cheung Kong MBA Program cordially invited Mr. Yu Minhong, Founder and CEO of New Oriental Education & Technology Group, to share his insight on the development and prospects of training and education industry. Also, Yu communicated and interacted with the MBA students in CKGSB.
After the development of ten years, New Oriental has become a comprehensive and global training company from a small-sized institution for basic education. It is the first Chinese education company which has been listed in United States. As the founder of New Oriental, Yu experienced all of the ups and downs, and he said, “Investors’ real concern is how much they can earn, and the more the sooner the better, but as companies’ managers, we should focus on not only the benefit, but also the healthy development of companies”, “As a CEO, it is the most important to make the company keep a long-term and healthy growth. As for the IPO process in United States, all the staff can feel the twist and turns behind our success.” In this rapidly changing age, excellent managers should be equipped with the ability of facing the challenges, i.e. the adjustment of the financial approach and organizational structure when domestic companies want to be listed in United States. No one can predict the future; no one can make decision in advance, you can only give your solution straight forward when facing the problem.

Today, the inconvenience from culture difference is decreasing, yet it still influences the commercial exchanges and cooperation. Yu made many examples to compare the difference of management approaches between China and the western and illustrate the necessary of the localized programs in the international strategic business planning. “Someone asked me how to make New Oriental growing so fast? My answer is that I did nothing except working hard every day. And the key point is that I love New Oriental.” Yu said, “Because of loving my career, I want to pursuit the perfection. Passion is the original power! Everyone should find your own beloved career and make all your efforts for it.” This is what we called a manager’s ideal.
In recent years, fierce competition grows in domestic education and training industry. The commercial nature of short-term training and consulting institutes, unlike the compulsory education by government ,has been fully exploited, and investors flooded into education and training market. As for the outlook of domestic education and training industry, Yu said that “Someone survives and someone died, this is business. But the key is whether you are passionate and enthusiastic about your career. I also invest in some small-sized companies, and I never check their financial figures but the entrepreneurial team’s passion for it. Though they may fail for several times, they will be able to be successful as long as they love what they are doing.”
At the end of the presentation, Yu answered questions from the students. Someone asked him whether New Oriental considered to invest in real estate. Mr. Yu answered that “I had so many opportunities to enter the real estate area ten years ago, but after analysis I decided to put all my energy to the industry I love. Now, there is some real estate investment in New Oriental, these are not for selling but for teaching and working. With the development of New Oriental, we will increase the demand of real estate investment because of the huge education market in China.” Finally, Yu gave his book “A Tranquil Life” to CKMBA students and wish them find the beloved job after graduation.
