Milestone Capital's Liping Qiu On Private Equity in China

BEIJING, December 17, 2009 - As Chinese companies continue to make global headlines for record-breaking IPOs in the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, and elsewhere, the opportunities available for private equity investors in China's unique political and economic environment have become clear. Nevertheless, the path to survival and success in PE in China are anything but clear. Therefore, Cheung Kong GSB was pleased to host Mr. Qiu Liping, founding partner of Milestone Capital, who shared his many years of experience in the sector through a presentation on the growth of China's PE sector, the analysis and implementation of PE investments in China, and exit mechanisms. Prior to founding Milestone Capital, Mr. Qiu worked for seven years at Merrill Lynch and Bear Stearns in Beijing and Hong Kong., and was therefore able to provide an in-depth view of the state of PE in China today.
The 90-minute seminar was organized by Cheung Kong MBA students in the Private Equity Club and the Invest in China Club, and was open to Cheung Kong students and alumni as well as to invited guests in the PE sector. It was well attended, with personnel from China's national regulatory agencies, IBM Consulting and McKinsey Consulting attending in their personal capacities.

The Chinese government has recently promulgated new rules for PE investments by non-Chinese investors. Until recently, private equity investors have only been able to invest in China through a venture capital company, which was seen as cumbersome given the restrictions and bureaucracy involved.
Jovn Wang (MBA '09 Intake), one of the organizers of the event, said that the seminar offered a rare chance for students to come into close contact with the PE industry, and was especially impressed by Mr. Qiu's analysis of the ways that PE firms are able to manage individuals and teams to obtain a maximized return on their capital.
