PROFESSOR PROFILES

CHEN DONGQI
Ph.D., Chinese Academy of Social Sciences

Chen Dongqi has a doctorate in economics and is a researcher and doctoral mentor. He serves as the Associate Dean of the Macro-Economics Research Institute of the National Development and Reform Commission. He was the Superintendent of the Economics Research Institute of the former Planning Commission of the State from 1999 to 2003. He was the Associate Dean of the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences from 1994 to 1999. He became an assistant bureau level cadre of the Scientific Research Bureau of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in 1993. Dr. Chen was the Associate Director of Macro-Economics Office of the Economics Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences from 1988 to 1993. He did postdoctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1992 to 1993. He was recognized as an outstanding student in the Harvard University's economics department from 1989 to 1990. He was recognized as the Prominent Contribution Expert of the Chinese Academy of Social Science in 1997. He gained his doctorate from the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in 1991. Dr. Chen won the Sun Yefong Economics Prize in 1990 and 1992 and has been an expert entitled to special government allowance since 1992.

ERIC FLAMHOLTZ
Ph.D., University of Michigan

Eric Flamholtz is a Professor at UCLA's Anderson School of Management and President of Management Systems Consulting Corporation, which he co-founded in 1978. He previously served on the faculties of Columbia University and the University of Michigan. While studying for his PhD at the University of Michigan, Eric was co-winner of the McKinsey Foundation Doctoral Dissertation Award. In April 2007, Eric received the "Distinguished PhD Alumni Award" from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan "in recognition of his contributions to and excellence in management and organization." He is the seventh University of Michigan PhD alumnus to receive this recognition. He has helped hundreds of organizations make successful transitions at different stages of growth and development. His clients have included IBM, Countrywide Financial Corporation, Starbucks Coffee Company, Amgen, Neutrogena and The Disney Store, among others. His books include Growing Pains: Transitioning from an Entrepreneurship to a Professionally Managed Firm; The Inner Game of Management (co-authored); Human Resource Accounting; and Changing the Game: Managing Organizational Transformations of the First, Second, and Third Kinds (co-authored).

LI DAOKUI
Ph.D., Harvard University

Li Daokui is the Mansfield Freeman Professor of Economics and dean of the finance department at Tsinghua University's School of Economics and Management. He is also director of the Center for China in the World Economy (CCWE) at Tsinghua University's School of Economics and Management. He taught at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology from 1999 to 2004 and at the University of Michigan from 1992 to 1997. From 1997 to 1998, he was research fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institute. His research expertise includes economy development, international economics and China's economy. His recent research interests include the impact of China's rise on energy and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as the internationalization of China's currency, the RMB. He was the chairman of the Chinese Economists Society (CES) from 2001 to 2002. He served as the editor for academic journals including the Journal of Comparative Economics, The China Review and the Economics Bulletin. He has served as a research fellow at the Europe's Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR). He is a member of the Association for Comparative Economic Studies (ACES). He is also a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and the deputy to the People's Congress of Beijing City.

HENRI SERVAES
Ph.D., Purdue University

Henri Servaes is the Richard Brealey Professor of Corporate Governance and Professor of Finance at London Business School.  He is also a Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research and a Research Associate of the European Corporate Governance Institute.  Dr. Servaes holds a BBA from European University and a MSIA and PhD in finance from Purdue University. 

His areas of interest include valuation, corporate control, corporate diversification, initial public offerings, capital structure, and mutual funds. He has published articles on these topics in all the leading finance journals, including the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, and the Review of Financial Studies.  He has won prizes for several of his articles, including the Journal of Financial Economics All Star Paper award for his article "Additional evidence on equity ownership and corporate value", and the Distinguished Paper Brattle Prize for his Journal of Finance article: "The cost of diversity: The diversification discount and inefficient investment".  He is an Associate Editor of six journals, including the Journal of Finance and the Journal of International Business Studies. In August 2005, he was featured in the Financial Times series on Gurus of the Future. 

His work has been presented at all major international finance conferences and at more than 70 universities worldwide.  He has had previous appointments at the University of Chicago, the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium), Duke University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and taught in MBA and executive programs in Russia, the Czech Republic, and Cyprus, and in doctoral programs in Belgium and Switzerland. 

Dr. Servaes has been involved in consulting and executive education for Anglo American plc, Barclays plc, Bertelsmann AG, the Chase Manhattan Bank, Continental AG, Deutsche Bank AG, E ON AG, The Financial Times (Lex Team), Freshfields, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, and Suez, SA, among others.  His work had been cited in a large number of international newspapers, including the Financial Times, the Wall Street Journal, CFO Magazine, Corriere Della Sera, Handelsblatt, and Institutional Investor.  At London Business School, he teaches corporate finance in the Masters in Finance Program, the Senior Executive Program, and the Corporate Finance Program.

TENG BINGSHENG
Ph.D., City University of New York

Dr. Teng is an Associate Professor of Strategic Management at CKGSB and an Associate Professor of Strategic Management (with tenure), George Washington University (GWU). He is doctoral advisor and lead professor of the departmental doctoral program at GWU.

Dr. Teng's current research and teaching focus on strategic alliances, M&A, entrepreneurship and innovation, and Chinese firms' global strategies. He has published over 20 articles in leading academic journals, including such top journals as Academy of Management Review and Organization Science. He is acclaimed an authority on strategic alliances, and has been interviewed by the media including the Wall Street Journal and Washington Post. His research is included in most textbooks on strategic management. Dr. Teng is a member of the Academy of Management and serves on the editorial board of International Entrepreneurship and Management Journal. He has received many rewards for his research, including the Wendell and Louis Crain Research Scholar at the School of Business, GWU. His bio appears in the Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Higher Education.

WANG ZHILE
Director, Research Center on Transnational Corporations, MOFCOM

Mr.Wang is director of the Research Center on Transnational Corporations, CAITEC, MOFCOM, Dean of Beijing New-Century Studies on Transnational Corporations, Vice President of China Group Companies Promotion Association, Vice President of IAC Committee of Foreign Investments, special research fellow at the Foreign Economic & Trade and International Finance Research Center, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and holder of expert certificates and special allowances issued by the StateCouncil.

Since 1993, Director Wang has carried out research on investment in China from Germany, Japan, Korea, Singapore and the United States. He has studied the China representative offices of over 80 transnational corporations and over 400 ventures in China with transnational corporation investment. These investigations form the basis for dozens of reports and publications on world economy regionalization and globalization, transnational corporation investment in China, and transnational corporation strategy and management, corporate responsibility, and sustainable development.

WEI JIANING
Ph.D., Chinese Academy of Social Sciences

Wei Jianing is deputy minister at the Development Research Centre of the State Council, a doctoral researcher, and recipient of a special government allowance. In 1991 he joined the Macro Economy Research Department of Development Research Centre of the State Council, serving as a research assistant, deputy researcher, research director for finance, and finally deputy minister. He was a visiting researcher at Tokyo University's Asia Economy Research Institute and at the Industrial Bank of Japan. He is also a standing director of the China Reform Forum, a member of the Association for International Understanding of China, and a Chinese Associate of Studies of International Finance. His main publications include "Factors that Influence China's Insurance Market", published in the Tenth Five-Year Plan of the China Insurance Regulatory Commission in 2002. He undertook research for "China's Endowment Insurance Development Strategy" in 2000 and published "Endowment Insurance and Financial Market – Research on China's Endowment Insurance Development Strategy".

PETER WILLIAMSON
Ph.D., Harvard University

Peter Williamson is a Visiting Professor of International Management at Judge Business School, Cambridge University. Previously, he was a Professor of International Management and Asian Business at INSEAD for ten years. Professor Williamson taught strategic management at London Business School and has taught executive management courses in Japan and Southeast Asian countries. He has acted as a consultant on business strategy, mergers and acquisitions, and international expansion to numerous companies throughout the Asia-Pacific region as well as in Europe and North America. He has experience in China since 1983 and is the non-executive director for many companies, assisting numerous multinationals and joint ventures, and more recently, Chinese companies venturing abroad.

Professor Williamson's academic research covers a wide range of interests, including globalization, market entry, mergers and alliances, and strategic innovation. In May 2004, his book, Winning in Asia: Strategies for Competing in the New Millennium, was published by Harvard Business School Press. His recent research projects concern globalization, alliances, and new business development.

XIANG BING
Ph.D., University of Alberta

Dr. Xiang is Professor of Accounting and the founding Dean of Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business. Prior to joining Cheung Kong GSB, Dr. Xiang pioneered and provided leadership in the EMBA and Executive Education programs at Guanghua School of Management, Peking University, and served on the faculty of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Dr. Xiang has delivered executive programs at many world-class universities and corporations, and is a well-known management consultant.

His research interests focus on comparative corporate systems, corporate governance, transition and management of state-owned enterprises, private enterprise business models, and corporate competitiveness in emerging markets. Dr. Xiang, who holds a Ph.D. from the University of Alberta, has published research in leading international academic journals, and serves as an independent board member on a number of Hong Kong and Mainland-listed corporations.

ZENG MING
Ph.D., University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Dr. Zeng is professor of Strategy at Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business. He formerly taught at the China-Europe International Business School (CEIBS) and Guanghua School of Management, Peking University. Dr. Zeng has conducted extensive research on e-commerce, strategic alliances, mergers and acquisitions, and strategy of globalization. He enjoys a high reputation both in China and abroad for his strategic management expertise. For many years he has been devoted to the study of how Chinese enterprises develop, a field in which he has produced extensive original research.

Dr. Zeng works closely with leading Chinese companies including Haier, Legend, and TCL. His case study on Haier's acquisition strategy won the prestigious Pedro Nueno prize of the 2000 European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) Case Competition. His research paper, "The Hidden Dragons" was recently published by Harvard Business Review and was cited by many magazines and institutions on enterprises in emerging markets. Dr. Zeng's research has been highlighted in the Wall Street Journal and The Economist. He is now a member of the Management Association and International Commerce & Management Association.

WANG Yijiang 王一江
Ph.D., Harvard University

Wang Yijiang is Professor of Economics and Human Resource Management at Cheung Kong GSB, and is also Associate Dean with responsibility for academics.

Before joining Cheung Kong, Professor Wang taught at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota.

He is also a research fellow at the William Davidson Institute of Transition Economics at the University of Michigan and a senior fellow at the National Center of Economic Research, Tsinghua University. He serves as vice president of Chinese Economists Society of North America.
